MRMPO has completed a 2nd draft of the Regional Transportation Safety Action Plan (RTSAP), which is a plan that analyzes crash trends in the region and helps identify needed safety projects and programs to improve safety for all modes of transportation, particularly pedestrians. The plan is critically important as New Mexico remains the worst state for fatalities according to the Dangerous by Design (2024) report. A huge emphasis has been placed on equity – improving safety in low-income and minority areas.
Both the crash analysis and outreach processes have focused on these vulnerable communities. One of the most important aspects of the RTSAP is that it helps set up local agencies to apply for Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) federal grant opportunities. This is especially important for smaller rural agencies and Tribal governments that may not have the staff or time to develop their own required qualifying safety plan. This document is a powerful tool in helping to attain the region’s long-term goal of zero fatalities.
The RTSAP is now available for download, public review, and comment.
The deadline for comments is July 19, 2024.
